We recently caught wind of Nerd Wallet's music festival affordability breakdown, and we couldn't be more thankful considering all of the math that's involved in such a study. Nerd Wallet broke down the value and costs of three of the summer's biggest festivals - Outside Lands, Lollapalooza, and Austin City Limits - to determine which of the three is worth its weight in ticket price. These are the measurement factors used, as explained by Nerd Wallet:

    - What bands will a festivalgoer see? We assumed that you would see bands on a main stage or the biggest side stage - the most popular bands.

    - How many bands can you realistically see in a day? We assumed you would be in the park from the beginning of the day to the end.

    - How valuable is a bands festival set? We measured a bands value with average ticket prices from their most recent headlining tours. We also kept in mind that a festival set is often shorter than a regular club show.

They determined the gross value of each festival's 3-day pass and subtracted the cost of a ticket to determine the net values: Austin City Limits ($631.36), Outside Lands ($621.94), and Lollapalooza ($550.87).

With so many festivals, it's great to see a scientific breakdown of which is the most worthy of such a hefty pay out. But what this study lacked were the true big costs of attending a festival: travel and lodging. Major festivals attract fans from all corners of the country and the world, and even if you're driving and sleeping in your car, the hit to your wallet will often exceed the cost of a ticket. So in conclusion, it's incredibly difficult to determine the most affordable festival option, it really all depends on the individual's geographic location, as well as his or her sleep preferences.
