Folk singer and multi- string instrument strummer Andrew Bird
has announced a new band, a new album, and a slew of U.S. tour dates. Bird's new backing band, Hands of Glory, gets their name from his so titled sister album to 2012's Break It Yourself
. Comprised of Tift Merritt and Alan Hampton, with whom Bird has playing for the last few years, and featuring Kevin O'Donnell and Eric Heywood from Bird's first musical outfit Bowls of Fire, the band isn't exactly new, but now they're official.
Bird's new album isn't exactly new either. Things Are Really Great Here, Sort Of...
, which drops on Tuesday, is a collection of Handsome Family
covers. Bird has been influenced by the folk duo for a while and toured with them in 2013, before the group's most notable stint as the band behind the theme song for HBO's True Detective
, "Far From Any Road", which we recently spoke about with them
. The album will feature a cover of the TD
hit, as well as a number of other tracks from The Handsome Family's discography.
"Tin Foiled", the recently premiered track off Bird's album, is his version of The Handsome Family's "Tin Foil"
off their 1996 album Milk & Scissors
