"Metal Heart" by Cat Power
I wish I had a better reason for listening to this song other than me just discovering Cat Power in all of their OG angsty indie rock. But I don't. This song is really sad and slow but it's not boring and it's not by Bon Iver, which checks off everything on my list.
"Let's Find an Out" by Snail Mail
This is Snail Mail's latest track off her forthcoming album Lush
and it's also kind of sad, but pretty short so as soon as you start tearing up, the song's over. Plus, Lindsay Jordan is a baller. One time she was playing at some university and she really didn't like the crowd because it was all these drunk frat guys, she she just said "Damn, this is the worst audience we've had the whole tour," and left the stage after four songs. Goals, amiright?
"April's Song" by Real Estate
This is an instrumental track from Real Estate's first album and it's the perfect springtime accompaniment. I listen to it when I walk the two blocks home from my subway stop to my apartment and look at all the trees and leaves around me and it almost feels like I'm in nature (almost).
"The Middle" (Cover By Benjamin Francis Leftwich)
I love this moody cover of Jimmy Eat World. Stripped back all the way so the lyrics don't get lost in the noise.
"If I'm Unworthy" by Blake Mills
Love how the guitar and the baseline work together in this song, plus the guitar solo bridge. And I love the opening lyric: "I've found a new meaning, for the oldest words in use."
"Don't Think Twice, It's All Right" by Bob Dylan
This has one of my favorite lyrics of all time: I aint sayin' you treated me unkind, you coulda done better but I don't mind, you just kinda wasted my precious time, but don't think twice, it's alright."
"Counting Sheep" by Shakey Graves
I saw him play Brooklyn Steel last week and the guy knows how to put on a show. Creative stage and light design with a great set list. This is the opening track on his new album "Can't Wake Up" and it's my personal favorite.
"Feel Alive" by Tiny Moving Parts
I'm a sucker for emo but their playful guitar riffs give them a unique sound that sets them apart and this song is an excellent example of that.
"Breeze" by Turnover
One of those songs you hear on your Spotify Daily Mix that makes you stop what you're doing and check out who the artist is. Mellow melody and a soothing voice but peppy enough to keep you interested.
DAVID P'S PICKS
"Charity" by Courtney Barnett
So far, this is the best track on the new Courtney Barnett album, Tell Me How You Really Feel. It's all about the drive on this one. Just makes me want to bounce.
"Be More Kind" by Frank Turner
Sage advice from this English punkart embracing his softer side. Seriously…listen to this song first thing in the AM and then go about your day.
"Wide Awake" by Parquet Courts
So, the Brooklyn punk band have entered their Clash/Talking Heads phase…this one was so unexpected!
DAVID M'S PICKS
"Change" by Great Good Fine OK
"This one is f*cking awesome" - David Moffly
"Talia" by King Princess
This song is your latest obsession. You're welcome...
BONUS PICKS...Because they sound like summer and Memorial Day Weekend is Here!
"Your Love" by HAERTS
The Brooklyn-by-way-of-Germany based project of Nini Fabi and Ben Gebert is gearing up for a return after several years away. "Your Love" is from the 13 Reasons Why Soundtrack.
"Trampoline" by SHAED
Our favorite synthy DC trio return with the appropriately titled single, "Trampoline". This baby is bouncy...
