Ray LaMontagne Performed an Intimate Concert at Town Hall in New York City Exclusively for Citi Cardmembers
is a brave man. Last night at Town Hall in the first night of a sold-out, two-night run, he walked out on stage in front of an adoring crowd and for the opening segment of the set played songs from his new album Supernova
. A famously introverted performer, Lamontagne lets his music make the statement for him. It was only after four songs when an audience member in the hushed room bellowed, "Ray, speak to us!" that he uttered "Hey Guys..." Perhaps the standard smart thing would have been to lay in a couple fan favorites and then gently intertwine the new material, but in a room full of acolytes this seemed to work. It did seem to hurt that Ray spoke with his faithful guitar tech who swapped out guitars for him between every song and not the audience.
The most notable of his new material was "Airwaves", a song that in the intimate setting of Town Hall was seductive and alluring with its horse whispers of lyrics and stands out as the best work off Supernova
. He finally relented and belted out the album's title single and then started to play the music that the crowd had assembled to hear.
Luckily for LaMontagne, his shy charms prevailed, and we applaud him for his boldness of bringing new material front and center.
