Do you remember that kid in high school? That kid who had a f***ing opinion about everything but every single word that came out of his mouth was offensive bulls***. Those kids grow up to be Bill O'Reilly. The notorious Fox News blowhard -- which is an impressive feat because he works for a network that spawns blow-hards the way that Newt Gingrich used to spawn divorce papers -- is making waves by claiming that hip-hop is responsible for the declining self-identification of being a Christian among our nation's youth. I really f***ing hate Bill O'Reilly.
I'm an atheist so I could honestly care less whether we have less Christians in America (though I respect religious faith because I grew up in a very religious family). But the best hip-hop record of the year (possibly of the 2010s period), Kendrick Lamar
's To Pimp A Butterfly
is an explicitly religious record detailing how (among many things) Kendrick's faith in God was one of the only things keeping him centered when the struggles of fame & success began to weigh on his soul. One of the primary antagonists of the record is literally THE DEVIL! And Kanye West's breakthrough hit, "Jesus Walks," was about how he needed Jesus in his life.
Bill O'Reilly's comments aren't about the interplay between hip-hop and religious affiliation in America; any study would show that there are more references to God in hip-hop than there ever are in rock or pop. It's about race and the fact that Bill O'Reilly likes to mask his deep-seated racism in bulls*** platitudes to his even more racist geriatric white audience. So, I'll leave you with this last thought. Bill O'Reilly, go f*** yourself. Feel free to quote that directly.
