Brooklyn's pop-punk quartet Beast Make Bomb
started as what lead singer Ceci Gomez thought was a joke between her and lead guitarist Glenn VanDyke. The two, having been friends for quite a while, decided one day that they were going to start a band together, but Gomez had her misgivings. "In middle school my friends and I would always say we were going to start a band, and nothing ever happened" she told us. "This time turned out to be real though." Gomez and VanDyke began writing songs together and still serve as the primary songwriters for the band, which also consists of fellow NYU Clive Davis students Hartley Lewis, on drums, and Sam Goldfine, on bass.
Beast Make Bomb fully formed in early 2010 and have already opened up for some pretty well-known acts, such as Queens of the Stone Age, Joy Formidable, Tokyo Police Club, The Whigs, and Cold War Kids. After winning Converse's Get Out of the Garage contest, they embarked on a national tour even making stops at this year's SXSW festival in support of the aforementioned bands. The band had a blast chilling backstage with random celebrities like funny it-man Asiz Ansari and chatting with Jack White about the state of Florida. After such a successful spring tour Beast Make Bomb is hitting the road again for a regional tour in July and are planning an August national tour, but not before they play a few dates in (below) their Brooklyn stomping grounds.
Beast Make Bomb's first EP Skinny Legs
was self-produced in a Clive Davis recording studio in just two days. Their second release Sourpuss
is a three-song EP that was recorded at Brooklyn's Headgear Recording Studio, which is where Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs, TV On The Radio, and Cymbals Eat Guitars have recorded before. Gomez says of the experience, "We had so much fun there (Headgear) because its an actual studio; it's not as sterile as recording in a school." Shortly, the band plans to re-release Sourpuss
on vinyl with an extra song added to the tracklist. Their full-length album is expected to be out sometime next year.
Make sure to check them out in Brooklyn this weekend if you're around the NYC area.
