Brooklyn-based folk artist IOLA
is as genuine as they come. With a refreshing sound and melancholy voice, IOLA has all the potential to make a name for herself in the industry. The project is the musical identity of Carey Sveen, who focuses on tragedy, heartache, and other heavily emotional situations. This is strikingly obvious in her new song "Bidwell".
"Bidwell" is a beautiful song. Opening with acoustic strumming, the song quickly builds into a more full sonic landscape as drums, background melodies, and electric guitar bring the song extra energy. IOLA is confident as well, repeating, "I don't need anything from you," repeatedly in the chorus. Her layered vocals sound lonely and isolated, but the backing instrumental is as lush and bright as anything you will hear this week. This is music to immerse yourself in, with a wave of different emotions may arrive depending on what interests you most: her voice, sound, or lyricism. IOLA may be a new artist, but she knows exactly what she is doing.
