Mississippi garage rock duo Bass Drum of Death
began as the solo project of lead singer and guitarist John Barrett, who started playing with just a guitar and a bass drum. Barrett wrote and recorded their debut album, GB City
, which recently came out on Fat Possum Records, by himself with only a guitar, drum set, and computer. GB City
, which stands for "Gravity Bong City," is saturated with heavy metal riffs and punk undertones that completely compliment Barrett's sporadic howling about chicks and drugs.
Bass Drum of Death stopped by New York City this past weekend to play a number of shows all over Brooklyn. On Friday night Barrett and drummer Colin Sneed tore it up at Glasslands after opening sets by Night Manager, Xray Eyeballs, and The So So Glos. Saturday evening began with them opening up for Young Prisms, Crocodiles, and The Fresh & Onlys at Music Hall of Williamsburg followed by a secret show at Shea Stadium with Unknown Mortal Orchestra, which didn't even begin until two in the morning. They roared through most of GB City
with gems like "Heart Attack Kid" and "Get Found" getting everyone dancing. After a weekend of Bass Drum of Death, its indisputable that their live shows require stamina but are a hell of a lot of fun for both the audience and the band.
Keep your eyes on the unwieldy rockers, Barrett and Sneed, and be sure to visit GB City
