In the wake of the world's tragic loss of one of the most innovative and iconoclastic icons of the last thirty years, it seems that almost every musician had a story to tell that involved Prince in some capacity. Country music superstar Chris Stapleton is one of many who Prince had resonated with on a deeply personal level.
Few have attempted to pay tribute to Prince through tribute, most likely because of how hard it is to do his songs and dazzling stage presence justice. None the less, Stapleton awkwardly prepped the crowd with "I'm gonna try this," just before beginning a rendition of Prince's composition, "Nothing Compares 2 U." Full of twangy guitars, harmonica, and a signature Stapleton sound, it's a very heartwarming and totally different interpretation of the original track. Donned in warm purple stage lights, he carries out a totally new take on a crowd favorite much to the audience's appreciation.
Stapleton's cover, compared to the original recording, has a really great grit about it, and rather than the more sullen tribute covers we've seen, he does everything he can to reinvigorate the music with his own howling energy and a boisterous stage presence. It's hard to imagine that Prince would want to be mourned in any other way than a full-on, uplifting performance that helps keep his fantasy-driven intensity fresh in everyone's hearts.
