Now that New Girl
is airing its final season (about time?), Zooey Deschanel
can focus on her side project: the music she's made with M. Ward
under the moniker She & Him
. The two have just today dropped two swanky new blues-pop tunes today called "He Gives His Love To Me" and "She Gives Her Love To Me" - their first new music in five years. "We have always believed that love belongs to everyone — so love songs should too," Deschanel and Ward said in a Rolling Stone
interview, as the songs were written for the new project Universal Love,
a new project that aims to make gender-inclusive songs for LGBTQ+ unions, ones that could potentially be played at weddings someday.
Fitting for this rainy day in New York City, both songs, which sound nearly identical with only the lyrics switched around to fit their differing gender pronouns, are twangy, blues-sprinkled tracks with Deschanel's buoyant voice floating above a bass line. The song tells a tale of someone asking their love to "love me just a little bit more, hold me just a little bit longer", inviting us into the warm, country-pop world of She & Him. Trumpets gently blow out the end of the song and we're left with that warm fuzzy feeling that love songs give you - especially all-gender inclusive ones.
Both songs are out on all streaming platforms now.
