Despite the fact the fact that The Flaming Lips
had a fresh new album on the way by the time they took the stage at SXSW, they still decided to do something nostalgic. During the show, they played their instant classic Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots
from start to finish and it could not have been more perfect. It isn't very often a band treats an audience to a full album experience in a live setting, and we are extremely thankful The Lips are carrying the torch. The show was indicative of The Flaming Lips signature live aesthetic, which is chock full of plenty weird moments. Sure, Wayne can't really sing all that well any more, but that doesn't mean he can't entertain. The stage at SXSW might have been stripped of the usual theatrics and props such as their gigantic UFO, lasers, confetti, and Wayne's balloon flyover
, but it was still heartfelt nonetheless.
