If someone deposits themselves at the bottom of life's gutter by the glory of their own actions, then the responsibility of climbing on out falls squarely on their shoulders...which certainly explains why North Carolinian musician Stu McLamb
is the lone soul piloting The Love Language
's eponymous, self-titled release.
Two years ago McLamb found himself booted from the band he was playing with after getting pissed, busting into the practice space, raising hell, and ultimately breaking his wrist in the process. Perpetuating the self destruction, McLamb moved in with the love of his life, yelled and screamed for 6 six months, and eventually split. Celebrating the relationship's culmination, the troubled musician pounded a fifth of vodka, and woke up in solitary confinement with both his ankles and wrists bound.
Shocked back into reality, McLamb moved in with his parents, rented a storage space, and set about writing, performing, and mixing his own songs. Recorded via the warm, analogue glow of his four track recorder, what emerged was a collection of songs that, while certainly lo-fi, recall the work of artists like Guided By Voices, Sebadoh, and most prominently, The Walkmen. Says McLamb, "I'd like to think of it as the audio equivalent of a handwritten letter to a pen pal with little handmade gifts inside".
The Love Language is currently touring the country Headlights
