They might not get the attention of fellow L.A. rap collective Odd Future, but Kendrick Lamar
's Black Hippy crew have been some of the most consistently excellent content producers in hip-hop for the last several years. Black Hippy
recently signed with Interscope Records, and Kendrick Lamar's proper debut full-length has a forthcoming (but still undetermined) release date. Lamar has released the first single from the upcoming album, "The Recipe," featuring none other than West Coast legend Dr. Dre himself.
When Lamar released "Cartoon and Cereal"
, we declared that the West Coast was back in the biggest way since N.W.A., and "The Recipe" just confirms these feelings. "Women, weed, and weather," form the core of Lamar's ode to his hometown, and the production puts you right in the mind of classic L.A. rap albums like The Chronic
or All Eyez on Me
. It doesn't hurt that the only other rapper out there with mic skills as impressive as Kendrick Lamar is Earl Sweatshirt. If you're wanting your West Coast anthem to start the week, Kendrick Lamar's got the hook-up.
