One of my predecessors at Baeble coined the phrase "the summer of chillwave" to describe the summer of 2011 when relaxed, understated synthpop ruled the roost. It was the kind of dance music that you probably weren't actually going to dance to, but you could put on some headphones and space out to gorgeous tunes in your bedroom and maybe shake your hips a little bit as you're lying down. I promise, that's actually a great thing.
I don't know about the rest of you, but I miss the summer of chillwave. We're premiering "We Are Grown" by San Francisco act Meet Me In Orbit
off their recently dropped EP Traveller
, and while it's a little more uptempo than most chillwave, it still retains more subtlety and understatement than your average bombastic synthpop act. It's Neon Indian meets Chromatics, and that sounds like plenty of fun to me.
