When we shot a session/interview with Melanie Martinez last year, we knew we had something special on our hands. When you talk about the "it" factor -- that quality that makes an artist special even if you can't articulate what it is -- Melanie Martinez has it in spades. There's the obvious John Waters-esque visual aesthetics but that's such a surface element of her appeal we don't even want to dive into it anymore. She tackles the simultaneous infantilization and sexualization of women in starker terms than any of her peers, and it shows with the intense reaction of her fans any time she posts new materials.

Martinez shared a making of video for her surrealist and almost Lynch-ian video for "Cry Baby" over the weekend, and if you have any interest in a peek into the creative process of one of the most ambitious and resonant artists working today, you should check it out. Melanie Martinez is turning into a phenom nearly overnight, and although her appeal right now is mostly limited to the folks who've managed to sneak into her little part of the alt-pop world, we're pretty sure she's another album cycle away from superstardom.
