One of our interns is on spring break this week (lucky kid... it's still cold as hell here in NYC), and it got me thinking about what are the best tunes to blast when you're partying your cares away about grades and college drama at whatever little corner of the world you're calling home for the week. We're not saying these are the absolute best party tunes in indie, hip-hop, and top 40, but we think they'll get the job done.
If you don't have time to read the whole article, we're including a link to the Spotify playlist here
, and a YouTube embed of the whole mixtape at the bottom of the article.
Kendrick Lamar feat. Dr. Dre -- "The Recipe"
"Women, weed, and weather." We think Kendrick knows what's up with spring break.
Big Gigantic -- "It's Goin' Down"
I'm not a dubstep dude at all -- at all
-- but I love Big Gigantic, and their jazztronica dub beats are perfect beach dance party tunes.
Charli XCX -- "Break the Rules"
This is one of Charli's best tracks, and this anthem of youthful rebellion and hedonism is the perfect soundtrack for any evening in Acapulco.
Foster the People -- "Call It What You Want"
We've been huge Foster fans here at Baeble for years, and "Call It What You Want" might be our favorite party track off of the excellent Torches
Killer Mike feat. Bun B. & T.I.
It's not a party without some southern trap. "Big Beast" was the club banger off of Killer Mike's instant classic R.A.P. Music
, and it gets everybody on the dance floor.
Phantogram -- "Fall In Love"
Part of spring break is meeting girls (or meeting guys depending on your gender/preference), and you might not "Fall In Love" but you'll want this tune to set the mood.
Katy Perry -- "Teenage Dream"
What? I love this song. You got a problem with that?
Action Bronson -- "Easy Rider"
At some point, your spring break might get... a little weird. And if it does, you're going to want Action Bronson there as your spirit guide.
Japandroids -- "Younger Us"
The easy choice here is "The House That Heaven Built," but we're not about the easy choices here at Mixtape Wednesdays. And this is the best "rebel against the dying light of our youth" track that Japandroids ever wrote.
Matt & Kim -- "Daylight"
A perfect song to day-drink to as you get ready for another night of debauchery.
Calvin Harris feat. Rihanna -- "We Found Love"
I'll repeat myself. I love this song. Come at me, bros. If you can't dance to this song, you're broken.
Passion Pit -- "Little Secrets"
There are few bands working today that are more likely to get me on the dance floor than Passion Pit, and this is one of their most rapturously danceable songs by a mile.
Vampire Weekend -- "Horchata"
Sometimes spring break isn't a trip down to Miami or Mexico or Cali. Sometimes -- if you're Vampire Weekend anyways -- it might mean a trip to Cape Cod where you can sip on some "Horchata."
Cults -- "Abducted"
This is the thing that you don't want to have happen to you while you're on spring break. Liam Neeson will not show up to save you.
Kanye West feat. Rihanna -- "All of the Lights"
Yeah, Rihanna's shown up on this list twice now. I make no apologies.
Stevie Wonder -- "Skeletons"
There's nothing funkier than Stevie Wonder, and if you want to dance to a classic, look no further than "Skeletons."
The Shins -- "Australia"
I did not choose this song cause of the name -- but, boy, if you're vacationing in Australia, mad props on making that bank -- but it's a perfect upbeat pop tune... with very dark lyrics.
Grouplove -- "Itchin' on a Photograph"
So, now your trip is over, and it's looking like you'll have to sustain yourselves on the more tangible memories of your journey.
CHVRCHES -- "Recover"
And now you're home. And your only choice before you drag yourself back to class and the real world is to...
And, as promised, here's the YouTube embed of the whole playlist at once in case you want to listen to it all without having to manually pick the next track.
