Late last month Mike Hadreas, the creative force behind Perfume Genius, quietly dropped a new single on his Youtube channel titled "Jory". Over the last 24 hours he's since followed it up with the release of "Lulla" and "Onscreen", two more singles that follow closely in the style of the original. I should also mention here that before you go clicking on either of the two videos you should know that they are both very NSFW and you probably don't want someone inadvertently peeking over your shoulder while you're watching them.

On his previous two albums, last year's No Shape and 2014's Too Bright, Perfume Genius explored new territories by spinning bold, avant-pop sounds with lilting, operatic vocals, but these three new tracks all harken back to the dark and muted piano ballads of his early career.

"Onscreen" especially utilizes a minimalist piano and atmospheric soundscape combined with near incomprehensible vocals to paint a haunting and desolate creation. Hadreas doesn't entirely move away from the sounds he's been developing lately though, as the song devolves toward the end in a swell of cinematic keys and strings. Fair warning the video for it also features the most full-frontal nudity. The video appears to be borrowed from some vintage porn, though your guess is as good as mine.

"Lulla" is the most delicate of the three new releases, opening with a muzak-inspired lullaby with pained and again nearly indistinguishable whisperings.

The three new tracks certainly stand as outliers right now in comparison to the rest of Perfume Genuis' current work, but stylistically it doesn't seem like Hadreas he's gone as far off the deep end as one might suppose. There's no news of whether they're just one-off releases or to be included into something bigger, but they are an interesting tangent to explore nonetheless.
