Arguably the biggest hip-hop band in the game, Philly's finest, the legendary Roots Crew
, has over twenty years of performing under their belts. The band, whose career began in 1987, is still as punchy as ever, as evidenced by their blistering performances. Despite their regular gig as the house band for Late Night With Jimmy Fallon
, the band found time to release even more recordings (2010's brilliant How I Got Over
, a collaboration with John Legend titled Wake Up!
, and the hip-hop concept album undun
just last year). From their humble, jazzy beginnings on Organix
, the band has pushed the envelope of hip-hop in every direction, making the energy of a live band and a myriad of collaborations both essential to their sound.
The steamy, mid-afternoon set at The Mohawk capped off an incredible day of music at MOG Music's recent SXSW Day Party, but it's hard to compare anything or anyone to the unique show The Roots put on. Despite all of their success in the studio, the band likes to take the stage and just play around, moving seamlessly from jams to songs and back, often without warning. From the signature sousaphone to the unmistakable drumming of ?uestlove to Black Thought's flow, get a taste of The Roots with a couple tracks from the performance here.
