Killer Mike and El-P were two of the most beloved figures in underground hip-hop, but forming Run the Jewels together turned them into superstars, and RTJ 2 was handily one of the best records of last year. The duo just dropped the video for RTJ 2 firebrand "Close Your Eyes (And Count to Fuck)" and I'm still picking my jaw up off the floor.
The video is a no holds barred, four and a half minute beat down between an unarmed black youth and a cop (played by Boardwalk Empire's Shea Whigham). Between this video and To Pimp A Butterfly dropping last week, I can't remember the last time the fire was roaring so hot for political hip-hop. You can't watch the video for "Close Your Eyes" and not be immediately reminded of the deaths of Michael Brown, Trayvon Martin, and Tamir Rice. It's uncomfortable and raw in the most powerful way.
