If you were to ask me to create a list of my top ten albums from the last decade or so, every single album on that list but two would be records that I simply did not come close to fully appreciating on first listen. Kid A
, Person Pitch
, and Funeral
did not really click until half a dozen listens later. Despite being sung entirely in Icelandic and the made-up Hopelandic, Sigur Ros's Agaetis byrjun
hit me like a Mike Tyson right hook to the jaw. Jonsi's falsetto and all of the strings and sheer (almost overwhelming) beauty of the album made it an instantly unforgettable classic. Sigur Ros is releasing its next album, Valtari
, 5/28, and you can pretty much guarantee that we'll be eagerly anticipating it.
