It's with shear sadness to confirm the shocking loss of GWAR frontman David Brockie, better known as Oderus Urungus, who passed away at the age of 50. Reports began surfacing early this morning from multiple sources including former bandmates and metal contemporaries before GWAR management officially confirmed the news.
GWAR Manager Jack Flanagan stated, "It is with a saddened heart, that I confirm my dear friend Dave Brockie, artist, musician, and lead singer of GWAR passed away at approximately 6:50 PM EST Sunday March 23,2014. His body was found Sunday by his band mate at his home in Richmond, VA. Richmond authorities have confirmed his death and next of kin has been notified. A full autopsy will be performed. He was 50 years old, born August 30, 1963."
He continued, "My main focus right now is to look after my band mates and his family. More information regarding his death shall be released as the details are confirmed."
For those unfamiliar with GWAR's catalog, David Brockie founded GWAR 30 years ago and recorded 13 studio albums while helming the band. Comprised of extraterrestrial musicians with an intergalactic bloodline, GWAR built a cult following for its character personas, thrashing musicality, and extravagant live performances.
GWAR's signature trademark of pouring blood on fans became a right of passage for metal heads across the world. Whether enslaving concert-goers, fighting monsters, or murdering the idiotic celebrities of the world, GWAR's ferocious tenacity for executing astronomical performances created a must-see show for music fans.
Speaking from own experience, I interviewed Mr. Brockie
this past December and I could honestly say that few musicians showcased such commitment to their fans like GWAR. Throughout our conversation, I heard the passion in his voice when discussing the vision of his band. For every city and show, David Brockie made sure the fans walked out with their money's worth of entertainment. Brockie's originality spoke volumes about his character and commitment to making his dream a reality. Oderus Urungus was a one-of-a-kind songwriter, performer, musician, and mostly importantly, a class act.
This tragedy follows the disappointing loss of GWAR's longtime guitarist Flattus Maximus who helped the band make a strong comeback in the early 2000's. Maintaining a high-wave of momentum before Flattus' eventual passing, GWAR worked extremely hard to keep its momentum going as evidenced by its strong effort on 2013's Battle Maximus
Looking back at our conversation, some of his quotes were chilling but represent his incredible spirit and dedication to a legacy that will forever among the metal community. In his own words, Brockie stated, "We're immortal, you know! I have been saying that since day one! If you're immortal, you never die and you just keep doing it. GWAR is the exception to rock n' roll history as a band that continuously gets better every year instead of getting worse. We will continue to do so because we will live forever. Even if my body is disintegrated, I have 50 other Oderus clones down in my basement. Just as truly as Cats
is playing on Broadway tonight, GWAR is a band that can last a million years. No other band is GWAR. There are no boundaries, no rules, and no limits. You're going to do what you do and if you do it well, you're going to be successful. When you play good music and have a great show, people will let you roll with that forever."
