Is there any band as polarizing and confusing as Death Grips? After announcing last year that they broke up, new music continues to consistently come out of the camp. After dropping the instrumental Fashion Week soundtrack back in January, the band is gearing up to release the second half of their assumed final album The Powers That B. Arriving almost a year after the Bjork sampling first half, Niggas on the Moon, was released, the second disc, Jenny Death, continues to expand on the band's experimental hip-hop aesthetic.
The title-track "The Powers That B" begins subdued. For once, MC Ride is entirely audible. He's still mad as hell, but it's almost as if he wants us to hear his lyrics. Repeating "I can't know what I'm bout to do/when I can't know what I'm bout to do," you feel like the man is about to stab you in the neck. The drums attack and pull back and come in again for another assault on your ear drums repeatedly. The bi-polar production flat-out works. At times dipping into acapella, the song is certainly political. Screaming, "I'm wearing black gloves through your mall I'm rich/you wanna check my pockets," MC Ride has got some serious beef to fry.
