You'll Never Guess Which Musicians Made the Most Money In 2013

Billboard just released a list ranking the top 40 money makers in music for 2013 and you won't believe it; New Kids on the Block and Celion Dion earned more than Eminen and Kanye West...seriously.

The world is still "Livin On A Prayer" with Bon Jovi as they made more money than Justin Beiber. Music critics once claimed Rush only appealed to musicians and geeks; 40 years later and they're raking in over nine million bucks.

Taylor Swift, Maroon 5, and Beyonc seem just about right, however, am I the only who thought Jay Z would rank higher? With a new album and co-headlining stadium tour with Justin Timberlake, Jay Z came in at 16 after pulling in a whopping $15,652,428.82.

According to Billboard, "The data used to compile Money Makers was supplied by Nielsen SoundScan, Nielsen BDS and Billboard Boxscore. Artists are ranked by U.S. earnings, calculated from touring, recorded- music sales, publishing royalties and revenue from digital music and video streaming."

The basic message to gather from Billboard's list: Live music is still the best way to experience music. Most artists make a majority of their income from touring, hence why The Dave Matthews Band, Trans-Siberian Orchestra, and Phish appear in the top 40. Based on further examination, music listeners still show an appreciation for classic rock as The Rolling Stones and Fleetwood Mac both rank in the top 10. As far as I'm concerned, Paul McCartney should appear on this list forever. While some of the names are cringe-worthy, a good amount of these artists deserve every penny.
