There is actually a storyline to this strange but epic new video for MGMT
's new track "Me and Michael" in anticipation of their upcoming album Little Dark Age
set to drop this Friday. This famed electronic-pop duo has not released a full album since 2013 but they have been serving up sneak peaks of what's to come with their title track "Little Dark Age" that was released in late 2017 and now this. It is accompanied by a weird as f*ck video that depicts the two band members discovering a small song on the internet that they really like and consequently stealing it. Amidst some very weird psychedelic imagery and an alternative universes where people use plastic organs as cell phone cases, the band members get pretty far along with their sham, garnering much critical acclaim and a lot of attention, until they are caught.
In the middle of the video, we get to see a fake news clip where the members admit to stealing music and a headline on the bottom of the screen reads "MGMT have stated that they didn't know stealing things off the internet was bad". Their lives subsequently go down the toilet as their bank accounts are frozen and the utilities are turned off in their house (see: a clip of the band members taking a shower in their psychedelic apartment and the water suddenly turns off--don't worry, all the...important parts are pixelated). Their fans reject them. Then, strangely, an older man begins pulling his intestines out of his body and making jello with them. MGMT learns their lesson: stealing things off the internet is bad. Luckily with this one, this song is actually 100% their own, and it's full of echoing, glittery electronic pop, a little toned down from what you might be used to from the highly popular summer-soaked vibes of Oracular Spectacular
, but hitting a sweet spot between chilled out and energetically bright, twisted with heavy drum beats, purposeful reverb and hollow vocals.
Get psyched up for their album Little Dark Age
coming out on Friday and try not to think too hard about this music video. If you do, you might feel like you're in the middle of a bad acid trip where people make jello out of their own guts and eat it. Not a good look.
