Mass media in America must have known that it had a conundrum on its hands when people realized that not only was Super Bowl 52 going to feature two of the most hated sports franchises in America, but one of the most controversial artists in recent history for the halftime show. Thus, in order to hold on to precious, precious viewers and dollars, companies everywhere stepped up to make sure that if you weren't going to watch the game or Justin Timberlake
, you were still going to tune in to the fire commercials. Surprisingly there weren't too many commercials that bombed this year, though if we had to give an award for that it would go to Dodge for their attempt to use noted anti-capitalist Martin Luther King Jr. to sell trucks.
But we're not here to focus on the negatives. Instead, we've got the top commercials from this year's Super Bowl, some of which feature a couple of familiar faces and star performers.
1. NFL's "Dirty Dancing" ad
The No Fun League finally decided to get lax with their end zone celebration rules this year and the results have been fantastic. There's nothing heady or complicated about this commercial, it just features the joys of football, and a routine that I hope will be making its way to the gridiron next season.
2. M&M's and Danny DeVito
In the past, M&M's have stuck to a tired, tried and true formula featuring their animated candy pieces getting into a variety of colorful, yet kind of bland, hijinks. So it was a step-up this year when they casted Danny DeVito to add a little life and a lot of humor to selling candy.
3. Alexa loses her voice
It's the Black Mirror
twist that nobody saw coming. Alexa, the home assistant-cum-eventual enslaver of mankind, has lost her voice, and celebrities need to come to Amazon's rescue. There's a ton of great cameos, but Cardi B'
s performance is freaking hilarious.
4. Doritos' and Mountain Dew's lip-sync faceoff
One is the most impossible track to rap along to ever; the other, the undisputed Queen of Rap. Doritos and Mountain Dew, the fuel of nerds everywhere, decided to team up on joint venture that saw Peter Dinklage and Morgan Freeman face off in an epic lip-sync battle that took no prisoners. Who do you think won it?
5. This is still a Tide ad
Tide has to take the cake for the most ambitious ad campaign, though that's probably due in part to the fact that they're trying to get people to focus on literally anything other than eating Tide Pods. But in a grand display of wit and satire, Tide spoofed every Super Bowl commercial ad variation under the sun, enlisting Stranger Things
' David Harbour to create a series of ads that are as funny as they are clever.
6. Donald Glover in Star Wars
You can never not get excited about new Star Wars releases, and how could you not get stoked on Donald Glover taking up the role of Lando Calrissian? Too bad he probably won't be doing any Star Wars-themed Childish Gambino releases around it.
