We just ran an interview with Craig Finn, frontman of The Hold Steady and one of the contemporary kings of Americana rock & roll. He's playing a headlining show at Lincoln Center tonight for their American Songbook program, and that got me thinking? What does the American Songbook look like in 2016? Clearly, classic rock still matters, but who are the new bands that a generation of music lovers will grow up and worship the way our parents adored Zeppelin or the Beatles or the Stones (who we adore as well)? Who could be the definitive acts critically and in terms of fan intensity of the last twenty plus years? And before you ask, don't worry. That's where today's Mixtape Wednesday comes in. From The Strokes to TV on the Radio to Kanye, here are some of our defining American bands/artists in the New American Songbook.
