Baeble Favorite CHVRCHES
is out with another swooning electro-pop tune - one that is perhaps more melancholy and serious than their previous record, 2015's Every Open Eye
. Starting out with beaming keyboard and stuttering synths, the song, entitled "My Enemy," begins with the warbling echo of The National
's Matt Berninger singing "I got no more time to hear what you think about me". In a confused crash of cymbals and an echoing beat, the song dips and dives between Berninger and lead singer Lauren Mayberry, emitting the sparkling electronic sound they're known for.
The upcoming album Love is Dead
covers a lot of ground - the hypocrisy of religion, loss of innocence, and the difficulties of dealing with misogyny as the front woman of a band. Mayberry explains the album as being about "coming to terms with the fact that there are great things in the world and there are awful things in the world and that you can't get one without the other," which keyboardist Iain Cook summarizes as "We're f*cked, the world is f*cked...It's Love Is Dead
, we're f*cked, what's next?"
On working with Berninger, Mayberry said in a statement, "We've all been huge fans of the National for a long time. We had played a few festivals together but really got to know Matt when we were involved in 7 Inches For Planned Parenthood, a fundraising and awareness campaign that he spearheaded. It's really inspiring and reassuring to meet other artists you admire and realize that they are trying to do some good in the world. We kept in touch after that and, when it came time to record My Enemy, Iain and Martin suggested I email Matt to see if he'd like to sing on it. We never realistically thought he'd have time to do it but he replied right away and recorded the track at his house the next day."
The trio's previously released single was "Get Out." Broaching heavy topics with hopeful electronics, CHVRCHES is switching up their sound a little and we're more than curious to see what the rest of the album
will bring. It's due for release on May 25th via Glassnote Records.
