A little under a month after announcing his plans to release a new album, singer-songwriter Frank Turner
has released the title track from Be More Kind
Inspiration for the LP and "Be More Kind" as a track comes from the work of Australian poet Clive James, who once said, "I should have been more kind. It is my fate. To find this out, but find it out too late". During a bit of introspection while discussing the album, Turner echoed those sentiments, saying, "In the modern world, that's a lesson that all of us, myself included could do to learn."
Yet "Be More Kind" doesn't come across as if Turner is trying to force a lesson from a stance of moral superiority. Sharing his own experience in facing a world that seems to have lost its mind, Turner implores, even begs for others to "try to be more kind". Pertinent to our current political and social climate, "Be More Kind" addresses the divisions we have sown between one another, shared and personal pains and the seemingly overwhelming challenges that threaten us all. It's all so much, as Turner acknowledges, but the importance of showing kindness to one another cannot be overstated. The song itself even defies the ills of the world, as it swells from a melancholic intro to a spirited and animated call to arms. Call it sappy if you will, reminiscent of "free love"-era battle cries, but "Be More Kind" couldn't have come at a better time.
Be More Kind
is out May 4, via Xtra Mile.
