Want a pair of tickets to see American Idiot
on Broadway? Yes you do, and here's why (and how):
Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt and Tré Cool (you know them as Green Day
) have done their part to solidify punk as an important mouthpiece for the kids to voice their gripes. Tough to find a kid in the 90s who didn't immediately identify with the pop-punk mentality of Dookie
. But their ability to chew up and spit out the neurosis of America's youth didn't end there. Many albums of iconic tunes followed, including a concept album explicitly exploring the idea of the American cultural and social machine.
(the musical) is the culmination of a vision by the band. It sets the music of their 2004 record of the same name (the same one that propelled them from bored teenagers to true social commentators) and a few selections from their most recent studio effort, 21st Century Breakdown
. Coupled with some dynamic set pieces and an exuberant cast, the show captures the best bits of the record's momentum while exploring different stories and characters first fleshed out in the lyrics, like St. Jimmy and Whatshername.
It might be a departure from your own twisted interpretation of the concept, personally I always thought St. Jimmy was just the schizophrenic alter-ego of the protagonist (but I read too much Chuck Palaniuk). Either way the staging is awesome, and if you enjoyed the record when it dropped seven years ago, you're in for an epic ride.
