We were nearly shocked when we found out Rihanna was turning 30 years-old today - because she has done so. damn. much.
RiRi has lived a full life. After looking at the long list of her accomplishments, you'd think she was turning 60, but nope, she's just really successful (don't worry, other 30 year-olds, she's rare). To celebrate her rare but incredible success, we're taking you through a timeline of her finest career moments.
March 2005: "Pon de Replay" is Released
It was like America had never heard a pop song before: we went nuts. Personally I was a little young to fully appreciate the beauty and perfection of early ‘00s Rihanna
but nevertheless this timeless R&B pop tune is still one we shake our booties to today, thirteen years later (thirteen years!).
2007: Good Girl Gone Bad Released, Featuring "Umbrella" and "Disturbia"
This album got RiRi her first Grammy. #bless.
2009: Surviving Assault and Coming Out With Rated R
Considered her most raw and unadulterated album with a darker twist, after coming out the other side of an incident of physical abuse from her then-boyfriend Chris Brown
. It's one of her less popular albums but for Rihanna that just means it only when platinum twice instead of six times.
2010: "What's My Name", "Cheers (Drink to That)", "S&M" Released
Behold: suddenly dozens of sorority girls squealing when any song from Loud
comes on the radio or over the speakers at a party. "Ohmygod it's my song
!" they all cry. Eight years later and it's still happening. Every Rihanna song is our song, though, if we're being honest with ourselves.
2012: Rihanna Founds the Clara Lionel Foundation
This organization helps struggling communities in areas like Brazil, Barbados, Cuba, Guyana and Haiti to fund education and healthcare programs for their struggling communities.
This is her meeting with the president of France Emmanuel Macron politely asking if he will submit to her just and fair rule as Queen of the World. JK. It's about access to education in rural areas. Same thing.
Fall 2013: BadGalRiRi Ties With Michael Jackson for Most Chart-Toppers in Billboard History
After being featured on Eminem's track "The Monster", Rihanna ties with Michael Jackson
for the most Top Ten Hits on Billboard's chart. It also won a grammy for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration.
Winter 2015: Rihanna Releases "FourFiveSeconds"
Slowing it down a little, Rihanna releases another chart-topper with unlikely duo Paul McCartney
and Kanye West
. What results is a kickass song about the weekend. What else were we expecting?
January 2016: Rihanna Releases ANTI
Definitely her most unique and experimental album, ANTI
is explicitly an anti-pop album, because otherwise, "you'll just sell out". Duh. The genius is unending. Though ANTI
was a bit of a departure from her dancehall R&B pop, it's complicated and original, plus it has "Work," which will make you wanna tap your feet in your Fenty Pumas even if you can't understand the lyrics.
February 2016: Fenty Puma Debuts at New York Fashion Week
Showing pieces like oversized fur coats with asymmetrical hemlines, fur backpacks, shaggy sweatpants and laced-up leotards, Rihanna showed us another side of her genius: fashion designer. Pairing with the athletic company she's since made silk tie slides and has single-handedly brought creepers back into style. Personally, I'm not complaining
March 2016: Interview With Vogue About #FreeTheNipple
In March Rihanna has an interview with Vogue
concerning the dress she wore at the CFDA event, which essentially sparked the #FreeTheNipple campaign and a worldwide conversation on female bodies.
"I have always freed the nipple. It was never to get attention...The bra just fucked up my sheer shirt." Damn straight.
September 2017: Rihanna Comes Out With Fenty Beauty
Rihanna comes out with a makeup line that features foundations for women of any color, ranging in shades from 100 to 500. Now you can look fly as hell just like her, for only the low low price of your left arm. Rihanna's Fenty Beauty collection includes foundations, lipsticks called "matchstix" with magnetic packaging that sticks together in a lattice-like formation, highlighter and brushes. All of it is cruelty-free and made without parabens or sulfate. Made by the best. Finally we get to pretend like we're almost as cool as her.
January 29th, 2018: Another Grammy Win
Won her ninth Grammy with Kendrick Lamar
for Best Rap/Sung Performance. Even though this year's Grammys show was a total bust, Rihanna kicked butt as usual with her performance with Kendrick. What an amazing duo.
February 8th, 2018: "Lemon" with N.E.R.D reaches #1 on Rhythmic Songs Chart Billboard Music
Her most recent release and already all over the radio, it turns out her rapping is just as good as her singing. The collaboration between N.E.R.D and Rihanna is catch as all hell and sure to be featured at every trap event for the rest of ever.
Happy birthday BadGalRiRi! Whether you're breaking musical boundaries, creating better educational opportunities for kids in your home country, or just hangin' out at New York Fashion Week, we all wish we were you.
