On Sunday night, Fergie
gave one of the worst performances of the national anthem before the NBA All-Star Game. It was legitimately one of the worst. It was so bad, it caused a major uproar on the internet and, unfortunately for her, two days later, people are still
talking about it. When everyone came into the office today after the long weekend, it was one of the first things we talked about. Because it's just not something someone could so easily forget.
If you haven't seen it yet, you can watch below. Basically, Fergie makes some, uh, interesting vocal choices? Sure. I see what she's trying to do -- she's trying to go for that retro, soulful type of thing, but man, it just does not
land. On top of the awful singing, we see the players' faces as they try to endure the tantalizing pain that is Fergie's voice. One player breaks out in a hilarious laugh. Chance The Rapper
as well as Jimmy Kimmel are even seen in the crowd. It's downright hilarious.
I had a lot of reactions to this myself. I won't bore you with a reaction video, but instead I shall gift you will my reaction in gif form, below.
When Fergie starts singing:
Then when she starts singing more:
Did she just...
When the first player's face is shown:
Ooooh my god, we're all in this together.
When Chance The Rapper appears:
And then when Fergie kept singing and we saw more reactions:
While Fergie looked extremely confident during her performance, she later issued an apology saying, "I'm a risk taker artistically, but clearly this rendition didn't strike the intended tone. I love this country and honestly tried my best." It's clear that yes, this particular performance did not strike the intended tone, since someone on Twitter compared the Black Eyed Pea singer to "my friends [sic] drunk mom acting sexy."
If they heard her rehearsing and still let this happen, then it was simply meant to be. I liked the performance, Fergie. Thank you.
