After dazzling us with her song "Hardest Part," featuring John Legend, Laura Welsh has released another single from her upcoming debut album, Soft Control. The singer/songwriter from the UK first received attention when she was featured on Gorgon City's dance-y track "Here For You," and her vocals stole the show. With "Breathe Me In," Welsh proves that she's talented enough to handle her own material.
"Breathe Me In" tells the story of a doomed relationship. Welsh's breathy vocals take a serious tone as she sings, "You take control while I stop making sense/Claiming my soul for your lost innocence/I wanna get out,I can't get out." The sparse track creates an atmosphere of both despair and hope that swirls around the listener with quiet piano, strings, and a trickling drum beat. The vocals are the most prominent element of the song, and they are stunning and heartbreaking as she pleads, "Can't you just breathe me in?"
After fronting the indie group Laura & the Tears, and then performing under the moniker Hey Laura, Welsh is ready to put her name on her music, and that can only be a good sign.
