As we approach the 20-year anniversary of R.E.M.'s monumental debut album, Murmur (April 12th, by the way), their music seems to be on people's minds. At a show this week in Portland, Colin Meloy and Ben Gibbard covered their song "You Are The Everything" with R.E.M. member Peter Buck, and while I'm inclined to complain about Ben Gibbard's botched harmonies and how he never actually says "Sing, sing the light," I'm a little too giddy to care. Meloy (of Decemberists fame) steps into the tune surprisingly well, singing from the heart with his signature trembling vulnerability. Peter Buck played on the Decemberists' 2011 album The King Is Dead, and last year, the band performed a stunning cover of "Cuyahoga." Before that, they'd had been known to perform some surprise covers at shows. Thanks for keeping R.E.M. alive, Colin!
