Filmed in an idyllic forest clearing, the trees bare in romantic autumnal setting and blushing with late-afternoon light, the new video for Rhye
's "Song For You" opens with what promises to be a romantic Valentine's Day date. Rhye and his beautiful girlfriend hang out amongst the branches, snap some photos, and then get in a car and travel back into town. Set over Rhye's lilting lo-fi melody and that sexy falsetto he is so well-known for, it seems like nothing could go wrong between this beautiful couple... until it does. Leaving his lover on the curb, Rhye drives back around to pick up his angry-looking lady just as the song croons, "just let me love you". They stage a fight in the car and the scene immediately moves into some soft porn, Rhye's female friend dancing in her underwear around their living room as Rhye murmurs again in the background, soft harmonies twining around the couple as they get closer to each other.
There's a dance party and Rhye's lover gets onstage in a fancy dress in front of an audience and twirls around, kissing another woman on the lips as Rhye looks on in unapologetic awe. They move to the bathroom where they wash their hair and then dry it under the hand dryer, teasing each other and laughing like a public restroom is only the most romantic date spot. Score. More romantic car scenes follow and the woman in the video cries just in time for Rhye's voice to swell in the background and burst out into tinny harmony as he walks away in the video. More gentle music and the woman crying on a couch, Rhye has left her, she continues crying and the video ends. What is the message? Everyone you love will leave you. Thanks Rhye, Happy Valentine's Day!
