The new remix of Tegan and Sara's catchy bubblegum single "Closer" comes as a breath of fresh air. Actually, it's kind of what I wish the track sounded like in the first place. The evolution is incredible: whereas "Closer" sounds basically like a better version of Katy Perry, remade to play in an Anthropologie chain, the remix sounds like a naughty robot approaching you in a midnight neon creepfest. The choppy loops and bouncing buzzes mask painful lines like "I won't treat you like you're oh so typical," but take the refrain "Come a little closer" to a haunting new level. Electronic mainstays Yeasayer bring to the song a subtlety and sultriness that it lacked originally, transforming the sugary harmonies into minor-key oddities, and layering the kind of lame chorus with plenty of ticks, claps, and extra-shifty synth.
Bottom line? This is a vast improvement.
