Late Night: Blink-182

Tom Delonge's guitar strap reads Macbeth, a blatant advertisement for his footwear line. Despite my knowledge of the connotation, I choose to be blissfully indignant, like things don't change, and I will think of Shakespeare. It appears thus that whether I am willing to accept it is irrelevant—Blink-182 grew up a while ago. The trio took to Conan's late night stage to perform "Up All Night" from Neighborhoods. Neighborhoods, on the whole, is a lot larger, gloomier and inflated than the albums we glorify from charming pop-punk kings of melody and masturbation digs. Tom's iconic voice tackled the verses (pronouncing "head" like "yead") and Mark Hoppus' infused the chorus with practicality.

Heartfelt lyrics ("I'm always looking out for you / and you're the one I'll miss / it's driving me crazy") bring purpose into clearer focus—the boys have always had something to say, now it's just hinged with a dose of honest heaviness and world-weariness. The song bludgeons. It is composed with attention to, on one hand, a particular searing riff and electrified fret sliding, and on the other hand, a delicious onslaught, a cacophony of all three musicians' matured personalities, in the chorus.
