City and Colour's 'Nowhere, Texas' Released For Notable Cause

Those who didn't grow up near the Texas/Louisiana border might not have heard of a little stretch of road called "The Texas Killing Fields." It's an ugly little patch of ground just a mile south of Interstate 45 that's earned its name and its reputation from the number of murder victims that've been found on its 25-acres: over 20 bodies since 1970 (it sounds like something out of a Nick Pizolatto story, doesn't it?). About the only way someone from beyond the region would know about it is if they'd seen Texas Killing Fields, an obscure 2011 film that didn't garner much attention.

Now that City and Colour (perhaps better known as Dallas Green, a solo artist who also worked with post-hardcore band Alexisonfire) has gone and released his "Nowhere,Texas" in support of Canada's National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women (the song's available for a download and all proceeds will go towards supporting the YWCA of Canada's Rose Campaign), though, I imagine this heinous bit of Southern history will become a little better publicized. The lyrics don't live up to the story and the real horror -- lines such as "will this highway's history/remain a mystery/or will the truth unravel over time?" and "no one knows/how far it goes/it seems that the bayou has become a world of hurt" are painfully literal, lacking in any poetic power and so do nothing to capture the foreboding those of us who grew up hearing about this story are all to acquainted with-- and the spare string arrangements just aren't spare enough but Green's heart is in the right place. The fact is that more light should be shed on this forgotten stretch of road and its sick history.

You can listen to the full track for free below but I might suggest dropping by and purchasing the track, since in doing so you'd be supporting a worthy cause.
