In the wake of literally taking over the world with "Bodak Yellow", Cardi B
has been restlessly working on maintaining her status as the premier artist of our age. Rather than resting on her laurels, she teamed up with Migos for "Motorsport", Quavo for "Um Yea," and Juicy J for the steamy and explicit "Kamasutra".
Today however, we finally have the long-awaited follow up to "Bodak Yellow", as Cardi returns to her own career with "Bartier Cardi". With a feature by 21 Savage
, "Bartier Cardi" is the first single to hint at the release of Cardi's debut LP, which we can probably expect sometime in early 2018.
Cardi doesn't break character here, flaunting her love of the high life, and owning her success and sexuality. There's sex, drugs, and diamonds, and an unchecked aggression that dares you to step to her. I found 21 Savage to be an interesting feature choice on this track, but he plays the part nicely, subtly bridging Cardi's verses and delivering some very NSFW but hilarious bars. Say what you want about mumble rap, but it's a nice complement to Cardi's aggressive, clipped lyrical flow.
Cardi B has admitted that she's felt the pressure mounting to follow up the success of "Bodak Yellow", which explains why she's been relatively quiet on discussing the new LP, but it looks like we've got a taste of what's to come now. After sampling it, we're ready for the full course.
