Tears For Fears, the British duo that blessed the 1980s with a number of New Wave hits, released a cover of Animal Collective's "My Girls." It is the third indie cover the duo has recorded as part of the promotion for their upcoming album, the previous two being Arcade Fire's "Ready to Start"
and Hot Chip's "Boy From School."
Tears For Fears reunited in 2000 after a decade's hiatus, following a random conversation over the fax machine, and released their most recent album in 2004.
On their version of Animal Collective's "My Girls," Tears For Fears go straight to the song's core, and exhume the golden pop melodies that the original hid under layers of ambiance. They take it all the way back to the 1980s—or at least back to the last few years' eighties pop trend. It is actually a fantastic cover, and the lo-fi computer-animated video is a treat:
