(aka Donald Glover) is certainly fully committing to the funk/soul crooner transformation that took place somewhere between his 2014 Kauai/STN MTN
release and 2016's "Awaken, My Love!"
. Clad in nothing but sequined pants and rocking his new thick mustache, Glover brought the second single from the album, "Redbone," to The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon
stage Wednesday night. While many people speculated Glover had used vocal pitching to achieve his Al Green-like falsetto, the performance seems to prove otherwise. Glover's vocals were on point and faithful to the sound of the album, soaring over the laid-back groove of his band. The background vocals were admittedly a little weak - something seemed to be off - but the funk remained intact.
If Glover is attempting to match the Childish Gambino aesthetic to the sound of the album, he's making a valiant effort. With the mustache, stubble, and slightly grown-out hair, as well as the flamboyant clothing choices, Glover's putting his best spin on the soulful sex appeal of many 70s singers. Whether he's succeeded or not is for you to decide on your own. But he's certainly succeeded in staying faithful to "Awaken, My Love!"
and his new direction in the face of some pretty polarized reviews. A performance to show off that those vocal acrobatics were indeed the real thing? Icing on the cake for Glover, whose 2016 has been eventful and successful.
