Electro-pop star BØRNS
, a.k.a. Garrett Borns has released a new track today entitled "I Don't Want U Back" in anticipation of his sophomore album Blue Madonna
You don't have to dig too deep into the name, because "I Don't Want U Back" is a poppy, synth-driven anthem of letting go and feeling yourself, and doesn't pull punches or bother hiding its true feelings. I'm usually wary of such blatantly obvious tracks in which the artist wears their heart on their sleeve, but "I Don't Want U Back" avoids falling into the trap of clichés and bitterness with a well-polished finesse.
There's something about BØRNS' gender-bending, androgynous style that helps him in this endeavor. Instead of coming across as a sour and spurned ex-lover, BØRNS chooses the route of empowerment, accepting his mistakes before allowing himself to move forward. Tommy English's production on the track doesn't hurt either, as he nails the uplifting mood with by skirting in-your-face aggressiveness and instead choosing a fuzzy-synth sound a bit reminiscent of M83. But BØRNS' honest, soul-aching lyrics really take the cake, and when he sings, "just so you know, that when you go, I ain't beggin for you back", you can't help but vicariously feel empowered alongside him.
"I Don't Want U Back" is BØRNS' third single from the upcoming Blue Madonna
. The album is set to release January 12 via Interscope Records.
