The Ally Coalition Talent Show is a benefit that's the brainchild of Bleachers Jack Antonoff and his sister, Rachel Antonoff, to support homeless LGBTQ youth. The benefit was held last night at Webster Hall and hosted an impressive array of performers including Carly Rae Jepsen, Charli XCX, Lauren Mayberry from CHVRCHES, Lena Dunham, Andrew Dost from fun. and more. Oh, and there was a casual surprise performance from Lorde.
A certain orange President-elect seemed to play a big role in the benefit as Antonoff displayed a few dozen Obama pins and opened the show with a cover of "Bloodbuzz Ohio" by The National, who performed at several Obama rallies. Dunham told the audience that she hasn't put that much effort into an outfit since the election on November 8th. The Daily Shows Hasan Minjah - a Muslim American - compared Trump rallies to walking through a haunted house with the lights on.
The musicians decided not to touch on politics during their performances. Lauren Mayberry covered Katy Perry's "Firework", Carly Rae Jepsen played an acoustic version of "Run Away With Me" and Lorde shocked the crowd when she appeared on stage to perform Robyn's "Hang With Me". At the end of the show, all the musicians gathered on the stage to perform Fleetwood Mac's "Go Your Own Way".
