Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward of She & Him took on a classic last week on Conan. The two have experienced such a grueling touring schedule over the past year in support of their second release Volume 2 that it is understandable that they might want to take a break and play something else. Check out their rendition of "I Put a Spell on You" below, along with some other notable recordings of the song:

The song has been covered so many times that many people forget about Screamin' Jay Hawkins, the songs writer and performer.

Though She & Him's version lacked the nose piercing, psychotic primal screams, percussion and general psychotic bravado that Hawkins brought with each performace, there is no doubt that Deschanel has the vocal chops to pull this off. Stripping it down to only vocals and guitar took the song to a new level of eeriness as well.

Another version to check out? Nina Simone's Jazzy take:

Volume 2 has been out for a while now so you should get around to checking it out if you haven't yet.-brendan mehan
