This year has been hectic in almost every aspect of global culture. We have had to deal with our incompetent president and all of his shenanigans, especially his Twitter presence (which has been a laugh). There's been groundbreaking cinema and television that has slowly begun to change the way we experience art. In turn we have seen the long expected downfall of some of the most powerful men in Hollywood with the Harvey Weinstein case, sparking radical change in the way our society views and deals with sexual assault. We've made it through some harsh times and some strange times, so here are a few of the music world's craziest moments throughout this crazy year.
1. Taylor Swift's Transformation
The transformation of the once sweet, innocent, country pop singer Taylor Swift
has been a constant headliner throughout 2017. First, she released her single "Look What You Made Me Do" which was a ridiculous attempt at some kind of rebranding... Was she trying to do a Miley? The song, although not our favorite, sparked an insane amount of conversation over her musical abilities and petty grudges with the likes of Kanye and Katy Perry. To top it off, the new album, Reputation
, was even weirder and offered nothing more than boring, basic tracks. The old Taylor is indeed dead and so we should take this time to mourn and shed a tear for our once wholesome princess.
2. Spotify Making Fake Artists
This scandal actually took place in 2016, but saw a resurgence this year when a Spotify spokesperson claimed that these allegations were "categorically untrue, full stop." Basically what happened was Spotify was accused of creating fake artists and putting them up on Spotify playlists as a means to lower the royalties they're paying to musicians and labels and help with negotiations with record companies. After the backlash several musicians came forward stating that the names listed were mainly pseudonyms for actual underground artists. Although the controversy is still potent, it remains unclear if any of this is actually true. So let's just assume our favorite streaming site is right and this is all a big hoax…
3. The Death of Tom Petty
The death of Tom Petty
was a sad moment for thousands of fans worldwide, when it actually happened that is. CBS News made one hell of a mistake when they tweeted "JUST IN" and recounted the supposed death of the legendary musician. Other news outlets continued to post about the death, with Rolling Stone even getting Bob Dylan
stating "I thought the world of Tom, I'll never forget him." But then, after all of these heartfelt posts it turns out he was still alive! This news was sadly short lived as he did actually pass away several hours later due to a cardiac arrest. So everyone had to re-mourn his death, which was weird and felt kind of fake.
4. Princess Nokia Throwing Soup at a Subway Racist
By far one of the coolest social justice moments of the year, Princess Nokia poured hot soup on a racist. It was just a regular day on the NYC subway when an extremely aggressive man started shouting incredibly racist and horrible insults on the train. Many people began arguing and it became a huge commotion, but when the train reached the next stop he was physically kicked off onto the platform. This is where Nokia comes in, the footage shows her throwing a hot cup of what appears to be pumpkin soup at the man, who seems to not notice. The video went viral and made us all cheer in full support for the throw and even more the moment the doors closed and he was left standing alone on the platform.
5. Ariana Grande & Las Vegas Shooting
These two moments are just downright terrible and heartbreaking. The bombing at the Ariana Grande
concert earlier this year caused a wave of support and love for the victims of the attack, with Grande performing a benefit concert to raise funds for those affected. It demonstrated the unity of people in times of crisis and was a beautiful scene. The other attack occurred at the Las Vegas Lollapalooza Festival where over 400 people were injured and more than 50 were killed. These two events shared headlines as their impact affected thousands around the globe.
6. Fyre Festival
Probably the funniest, most mind-boggling crazy moment of the entire year. Who doesn't remember this wild ride of a failure? Advertised to the rich and famous millennials as the "Coachella in the Bahamas," Fyre Festival appeared to be the luxury festival anyone with a spare 20k could attend. However, despite campaigns with Kendall Jenner and Bella Hadid, the organizers failed magnificently. When guests showed up on the island, there were no luxury villas, no delicious food trucks, no leisurely activity areas, not one thing that was promised appeared on the island. Instead it was a muddy, white bread with a slice of tomato and cheese disaster --
well, for the guest at least. For the rest of the regular folks we had a big laugh at the ultra rich and their surprising misfortune. However, that being said, it was a catastrophe and those poor rich kids didn't deserve what they paid for.
7. Sia Leaked Photo
In the midst of the privacy breaches that seem to occur daily in our modern world, Sia
managed to take back her control. It came out that someone had threatened to release her nude photos for money, but in true Sia style, she leaked them herself. She posted the photo of her nude backside on her Instagram, stating "Here it is. Everyday is Christmas!" And so we say thank you, for making christmas come early and for showing those evil paparazzi the power of body positivity!
8. Beyonce's Twin Pregnancy Announcement
, whatever you do is magical! With her glamorous over the top attitude, Bey announced the pregnancy of her twins in this wonderful photo shoot. She posted it on Instagram and stated the news comes from The Carters, making us even more jealous of their family unity!
9. The Wave of "Despacito"
Now the most played video on Youtube, "Despacito" has literally taken the world by storm. Everyone knows the song, be it the Spanish version or the one with Justin Bieber
, it is an absolute hit. Played in almost every country, in almost every household, this song has become an internet superstar. There are even memes made from the track, but of course because it's 2017 and everything is a meme.
10. Nicki Minaj Paper Cover
Nicki Minaj has been the centre of some pretty heavy controversy over the past few months, especially in regards to her brother's conviction of sexual assault. Minaj spoke openly about her brother and her belief in his innocence, which has caused extreme divisions amongst her fans. However this time it is merely for her raunchy Paper Magazine cover. The hashtag Paper used #breaktheinternet has become their new marketing campaign and it works. Nicki looks fabulous on the cover and anyone who is anyone has seen it had an opinion about it, which the point of the internet, right?
11. Frank Ocean's Birthday Bash
Of course his birthday would be extra -- it's Frank! It was extra in absolutely every way possible. The theme was Paris is Burning after the famous documentary that exposed the glamour of ball culture in New York City during the 80's and the LGBTQI communities involved. Celebrities including Tyler, The Creator, SZA, and Drag Queen Gia Gunn all attended and gave Frank a birthday bash he and we, will never forget.
