For an album to be a huge letdown, its expectations have to be just as big, and this year's nominees for Biggest Letdown definitely came with big hopes attached. The Temper Trap and The xx were both trying to replicate their respective forms of magic with sophomore releases. The Shins and Bloc Party were big-pedigree bands coming back from relative hiatuses (it had been 5 years and 4 years in between albums, respectively). And no matter what it is, whenever Kanye West releases something, the expectations are going to be enormous and they certainly were for Cruel Summer
. So who was the winner (or in this case, the biggest loser)?
THE BIGGEST LETDOWN:
1. The xx - Coexist - 36%
2. The Temper Trap - The Temper Trap - 17%
3. The Shins - Port Of Marrow - 17%
4. G.O.O.D. Music - Cruel Summer - 16%
5. Bloc Party - Four - 14%
Picking up more than a third of the vote, The xx's Coexist
sort of ran away with the competition for Biggest Letdown. We can't argue with those numbers, but it's funny - of these five albums, Coexist
might be the strongest one. We suspect that our fans were expecting so much more from it and The xx simply couldn't come through. Coexist
inches The xx's evolution as a band in minute, almost negligible ways, subtly integrating EDM techniques but mostly sticking to the quiet whispers that first earned acclaim. For a band with as much musical and creative talent - anchored by the genius production of Jamie xx - inches just aren't enough.
