Okay, so today's SOTD might be a little much. It might overwhelm you and hurt your brain at first (and I don't mean that in a condescending way, it hurt my brain at first as well), but give it a few listens and it will become your new favorite song.
Singer/bassist/composer Esperanza Spalding
is one of the most talented musicians out there right now - purely creating her own, new lane of music. After winning several Grammys and releasing 2012's Radio Music Society
which was very much a standard jazz album, she decided to take things a step further with her latest, Emily's D+Evolution
, and somehow combine jazz, psychedelic rock, funk, and soul. With smooth and complex vocals that somehow don't clash with the also complex chord changes, this roller coaster of a song is explosive. Pretty much like "Good Lava" (pun intended)!
