In the build up to the official release of his mixtape collection, Trilogy
, Abel Tesfaye aka The Weeknd
has been releasing rather moody, monochromatic music videos. This one, featuring Drake
, is not like the others. Don't get me wrong, "The Zone" is plenty moody, but there's also more going on in it than The Weeknd's previous visuals. Directed by Tesfaye himself, the video borrows imagery from the mixtapes' cover art, depicting a lingerie-clad, possibly faded female in a room full of balloons. Things get much darker when Drake, actually on camera, lays his verse down -- lights turn off, strobes turn on, tears may or may not fall. It's sort of like when a party gets cut short because someone puked on the couch. Only Abel Tesfaye can make a model and balloons seem haunting.
So enjoy that below!
