Enigmatic artist and Smiths frontman Morrissey
has a new single out today titled "Jacky's Only Happy When She's Onstage." It's part of his upcoming album Low in High School
, due out later this month on November 17, and is preceded by two other recently released singles, "Spent the Day in Bed" and "I Wish You Lonely."
"Jacky" and the previous two singles are lyrically typical of Morrissey, who has made a career of approaching rock and roll with an outsider's perspective. It seems that Low in High School
may follow suit, with much of the lyrics of "Jacky" discussing a performer who only feels at home in a make-believe setting. Morrissey has mentioned in past interviews
that protagonists like the one in "Jacky", or people who are "socially unacceptable in the arts", are the ones he tries to focus on when writing songs.
Melodically, the track is a little sinister, especially when paired with the repeated closing lyrics "Everybody's running to the exit." Other parts of this song, and the other two recently released tracks, point to this album having a bit of political and/or social commentary.
Morrissey is scheduled to hit the road a few weeks after the album drops, with his first show at Madison Square Garden on Saturday, December 2. I wonder if he'll be happy onstage.
