has released "Sans" today, a new track from her forthcoming rarities album Phases
. Though Olsen has performed the track live on radio before, this is the first time we're hearing it on recording, and in both instances Olsen sounds equally impressive.
"Sans" is noticeably stripped down, dropping the full band and leaving only Olsen and her guitar to take the center stage. In stunning fashion, Olsen channels a Loretta Lynn-esque country crooning style that is simultaneously reminiscent of a time gone by and fresh, and flavored by her own captivating prowess as a modern singer-songwriter. While intimate and vulnerable in ways only an Angel Olsen track can be, there is also a self-assuredness and power carried in Olsen's vocals. She also released a statement with the song, detailing some of her personal experiences with being an artist on the road.
"'Sans' was a song I wrote in between Burn Your Fire and My Woman, something short and simple - but about a big thing in my life: travel and what it can do to the psyche. When you're out there and you're working and moving so fast it's difficult to really imagine a time when you were fully realized and known. You know, it's hard enough to be known when you're around! But then there are those people in your life that know you and don't need you around all the time to be or feel close-I suppose it's about that too."
, a collection of b-sides, demos, and unreleased tracks, is out November 10, via Jagjaguwar Records.
