Mother-daughter relationships can be complicated, especially when comparing an older generation to an ever evolving younger voice.

If were talking about generational conflicts in music, things get even more fraught. For instance, Sinead O'Connor telling Miley Cyrus that, "She better not go out dressed like that." Annie Lennox getting passive-aggressive with Beyonc in her You dont really understand what a feminist is, dear comments. And, lets try not to think about Jennifer Lopez showing up young-enough-to-be-her-daughter, Iggy Azalea, in her Booty video.

But what if we took the genealogy of women artists a bit more seriously? Like Nirvana did in their Joan Jett to Lorde via St. Vincent and Kim Gordon matriarchal performance at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame?

The female influences on an artist like FKA twigs are pretty obviousfrom her Beth Gibbons style voice and her reminiscent-of-Sad looks. Her masochistic lyrics and the Water Me video make you think of Sinad OConnor (the cool version, not the judgmental one). However, FKA twigs closest mother is Bjork. Not just because they share a surreal style and slightly alien persona, but because of their electronic experimentation, their unique artistic vision, and their uncompromising vocal presencethink about the expansive echoes in Medulla and the intimate whispers on LP1--theres a bloodline there.

Scottish pop band, Chvrches are clearly interested in the maternal (cf. The Mother We Share a woman whos around, appropriately enough, when it all fucks up.). You can easily trace Lauren Mayberrys jangly vocals and the bands layered synthesized sound through a matrilineal lineback to fellow Scot, Elizabeth Fraser of the Cocteau Twins, an influence Mayberry enthusiastically claims.

What about Lorde--Miley and Taylors edgier sister from another mother? She's a teenager who sounds pissed off in her songsmaybe shes Fiona Apples musical daughter? No. Not with that deep-toned voice, those arms akimbo dance moves, and that penchant for shoulder pads and severe eyebrows. Lorde's musical mother is undoubtedly Siouxsie Sioux.

Who else do you think is a musical mother?
